Map of anticipated route

After careful consideration, extensive research and a panic attack or two, due to our ever decreasing time scale, we have come to the conclusion that we are NOT going to reinvent the wheel. But simply take the best of all the accounts we have read, work out our own “must see’s”, and follow a well trodden path from Quito in Ecuador, down through Peru, a dabble into Bolivia, Chile, and then Argentina ending in the southern most city in the world, Ushuaia. This path will of course take in the Andes and Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca (the hightest navigable lake in the world at 12,500 feet), the Great salt Lake of Uyuni and all the the blood, sweat, tears and tyre changes in between! Please see the map of the route for a more detailed look at just where we’re heading! We’re really not sure just how far it is, it all depends on exactly where we decide to go but it’s probably in the region of 8000 miles (12,800km)

How long will it take?

Not really sure to be honest, but we have approximately 7 months from the end of July 2007 through to February 2008! I keen to take a lot of photographs on this trip, so I guess a fair amount of time will be spent making the most of those early mornings and late evenings when the light is magical.

The mode of transport?

Koga signature touring bikeThe trusty old bicycle, although they’re not so old, more like brand new and purpose built for this trip by the fantastic Koga company who specialise in touring bikes. In a nutshell these bikes are simply amazing and just wonderful to ride, check out the page on all the equipment stuff for those of you that like all the technical gadgets and toys!

Where will we be staying?

Our tentMostly in our tent, wherever we end up at the end of the day. Sometimes we’ll stay in a motel/hotel, but only on rest days and when it’s not appropriate like in the middle of a city. Most the time we’ll be in remote locations and will simply camp in the wilderness, other times we’ll be stuck in cities but very infrequently, afterall we want experience the great outdoors and come home appreciating those creature comforts we all take for grantid so easily.
